Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing Fairs

Agriculture, livestock and fisheries are part of the primary sector, whose economic activities are related to the collection or extraction and transformation of natural resources with little or no manipulation. These activities are intended to produce food and obtain materials of biological origin.

Since the second half of the last century, it has undergone a process of modernisation and mechanisation that has led us to a more efficient sector in general.

Agriculture, livestock and fishing

In recent decades the Spanish economy has undergone considerable structural changes. Its irrepressible transformation has completely changed the weight of economic activities. The primary sector has been replaced by the service sector, giving rise to the activation of the tertiary productive fabric.

Even so, Spain has traditionally been a country linked to agriculture. The fact that half of the country's surface area is devoted to agri-foodstuffs is proof of this. Today, it is among the largest producers in Europe, as Spanish agriculture is at the forefront of technological innovation in extraction methods. In addition, it enjoys good levels of health protection and gender inclusion.

With regard to livestock, it is a sector that has made great efforts to overcome the various food crises and to strengthen consumer confidence. To this end, the sector is immersed in a plan to improve sustainability, increase competitiveness and efficiency in its processes.

For its part, the fishing industry is in a moment of stability. The increase in fish consumption, due to the improvement of the population's eating habits by associating it with a healthy lifestyle, as well as the boom in fish farms and the inclusion of new species in the diet have contributed positively to its situation.

The agriculture, livestock and fisheries sectors

Technological innovation applied to the sector and an increase in a younger workforce mean that the agricultural sector can rise and halt the downward trend experienced in recent times.

Likewise, livestock farming is taking a step forward in the face of globalization, by intensively commercializing the exploitation of bovine, porcine, beef and poultry species. Another key factor for the development of the sector has been the consolidation of the extensive method in the national territory, favouring animal welfare and sustainability, promoting the use of native breeds to the available resources.

On the other hand, fisheries is undergoing a technological revolution that is bringing the more traditional fisheries out of their lethargy, and this is also being fostered by the boom in aquaculture, which benefits the production of certain species at a lower cost.
