The general secretary of the UNWTO has informed the King of Spain of the importance of the tourism sector in the economic and social recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

He pointed out the urgency of achieving a coordinated international political response, as well as a true commitment to supporting tourism, a sector that represents 10% of global employment.

The Secretary-General of the UNWTO was received by the King of Spain to evaluate how the pandemic is affecting the tourism sector both nationally and internationally. The meeting is an acknowledgement of the importance of the tourism sector for the economic and social recovery from the pandemic, during which the Spanish Head of State learned first-hand the global response that is being led by the World Tourism Organisation.

The COVID-19 crisis coincided with the beginning of the Decade of Action, the countdown to meeting the 17 Goals derived from the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Tourism has in fact proven its relevant role in sustainable development, “and this is why it should be part of the rescue programs and actions, ensuring that no one is left behind”, said Pololikashvili.
