Such department has already been established in 5 more hospitals of the Vithas health group, precisely in Vithas Nisa Valencia al Mar, Virgen del Consuelo and Aguas Vivas in Valencia and Vithas Nisa Hospital in Seville, and a specialised centre in Elche. Vithas is the first healthcare operator with 100 por ciento Spanish capital and the second largest nationwide, with 19 hospitals and 28 medical centres called Vithas Salud.

This Unit has become a national and European benchmark both for its comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of brain damage and other neurological diseases, as well as for its extensive line of research focused on altered states of consciousness and the application of new technologies to improve the quality of its healthcare.

Currently, in Galicia, there are more than 35,000 people affected by acquired brain damage, most of them caused by stroke or traumatic brain injury. Vithas Nuestra Señora de Fatima Hospital with that respect offers both inpatient hospitalisation area, as well as facilities for outpatient care. It aims at achieving the highest level of recovery of physical and psychological functions to promote the highest level of functional autonomy and social adaptation of their patients.

The Unit treats a broad array of pathologies, such as the traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, anoxia, brain tumours, encephalitis, neurodegenerative diseases (Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease) or spinal cord injuries.

The workforce behind it is composed of a multidisciplinary team of professionals specialised in the field of neurorehabilitation (neurologist, rehabilitation specialist, neuropsychologist, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, cognitive therapists, social worker, nurses and auxiliary nurses) offering intensive, specialised and individualised treatment to suit the specific needs of each adult or child, both on outpatient and inpatient bases.

Being located within the Vithas Hospital in Vigo, the Unit allows the patients rapid and coordinated access to all types of examinations using the most advanced technology. Furthermore, the Galician neurorehabilitation department will have an adapted swimming pool, a virtual reality laboratory and other innovative resources, bringing all the technology developed over the years by NEURORHB  at the service of patients.

Brain damage affects not only the patients but their families too. For this reason, the new NEURORHB centre will also have a specific training plan and service for patients' family members, already available in its other five hospitals, located in the Valencian Community and Andalusia, to ensure that they have as much information as possible to maximise their quality of life.
