Maribel López has been appointed by IFEMA to act as codirector of ARCO jointly with Carlos Urroz, with whom she has been collaborating closely since 2011. With a degree in Art History from the University of Barcelona, her whole professional career has been geared towards the field of galleries. Between 1999 and 2007 she was the deputy director of Galería Estrany-de la Mota in Barcelona, her native city, and between 2007 and 2010 she directed the Maribel López Gallery in Berlin. During both stages, she was a founding member of two curatorial teams, Creatures (1994-2000 in Barcelona) and The Office (2007-2010 in Berlin). She was also the head of the section: Opening, Jóvenes Galerías at ARCOmadrid, to later become involved in the fair’s organisation as its commercial director and director of curatorship programmes.

This change over in ARCO’s senior management was brought about when Carlos Urroz announced his desire to take on new projects after the end of the 2019 International Contemporary Art Fair in Madrid. Likewise, the appointment of Maribel López represents an endorsement of the project developed by Urroz over the last decade. "We are committed to our internal talent and the excellence of the people who work in our organisation, recognising their merits and the passion they put into carrying out their activities. We are convinced -says Eduardo Lopéz-Puertas, IFEMA's general director- that this transition model for ARCO's senior management essentially guarantees the successful continuation in the strong forward momentum that ARCO as a project has experienced in recent years under the leadership of Carlos Urroz."

In the words of Maribel López, "directing ARCO makes me feel extremely proud as it is a great opportunity to continue working for art. I am aware of the responsibility and the challenge that I am taking on, but I am confident that I can count on an exceptional human team and the support of a large organisation which I thank for putting its trust in me."

For his part, Carlos Urroz states that "it has been an honour to work for more than a decade and a half in this project, first as commercial director and later as director of the Fair, a project that is so important for culture and contemporary art in our country. I appreciate the support I have received during these years from all the public and private sectors. With ARCOmadrid 2019, I will close a professional and personal cycle based on the conviction that periodical renewal at the head of large cultural institutions is highly desirable in order to let new approaches and perspectives come to the fore."

ARCOmadrid, International Contemporary Art Fair, will be held in Madrid between 27 February and 3 March 2019.
