British and Germans lead overnight hotel stays in Spain

Travellers from the United Kingdom and Germany accounted for 28.8% and 17.1%, respectively, of overnight stays in hotel establishments by non-residents last June, according to the latest INE data.

According to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), overnight stays in hotel establishments increased by 2.1% in June compared to the same month in 2024, exceeding 38.9 million. Those of travellers resident in Spain decreased by 1.3%, while those of non-residents increased by 3.7%. During the first half of 2025, overnight stays rose by 0.4% compared to the same period of the previous year. Those of travellers resident in Spain decreased by 0.7%, while those of non-residents increased by 1%.

Andalusia, Catalonia and the Valencian Community were the main destinations for travellers resident in Spain in June, with 21.7%, 15.3% and 13.1% of the total number of overnight stays, respectively. The main destinations for non-residents were the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and the Canary Islands, with 33.7%, 18.7% and 17.8% of the total, respectively. By tourist areas, the island of Mallorca recorded the highest number of overnight stays, with more than 7.3 million. The tourist destinations with the highest number of overnight stays were Barcelona, Madrid and Calvià.

Travellers from the United Kingdom and Germany accounted for 28.8% and 17.1%, respectively, of total non-resident overnight stays in June. Overnight stays by travellers from France, the United States and the Netherlands (the next largest source markets) accounted for 6.6%, 5.2% and 4.3% of the total, respectively.

Occupancy and prices

According to INE data, in June, 66.1% of the available places were occupied, representing an annual increase of 1.5. The weekend occupancy rate by bed places grew by 2.5% to 72.8%. The Balearic Islands recorded the highest occupancy rate by bed places in June (82.2%). The tourist destination with the highest level of occupancy by places and at weekends, was Palma-Calvià, with 84.1% and 87.6%, respectively. The tourist destination with the highest occupancy rate by bed places was Muro (90.8%), while Sóller had the highest weekend occupancy rate (91.1%).

The Hotel Price Index rose by 5.2% in June compared to the same month in 2024. By autonomous communities and cities, the highest increase was recorded in the Principality of Asturias (10.3%); and the lowest increase in Catalonia (1.6%). By category, the highest price increase occurred in two-gold star establishments (9.2%). 

Hotel sector profitability

The average hotel turnover per occupied room (ADR) was 129.5 euros in June, an increase of 5.5% compared to the same month in 2024. The average daily revenue per available room (RevPAR), which is determined by the occupancy of these establishments, reached 97.2 euros, an increase of 7.8%. By category, the ADR was 307.8 euros for five-star hotels, 133.1 euros for four-star hotels and 104.5 euros for three-star hotels. The RevPAR for these same categories was 227.6, 109.1 and 81.1 euros, respectively. The tourist spot with the highest ADR and RevPar was Estepona, with 323.3 and 252.1 euros, respectively.
