The big professional date on the Spanish-language book calendar, LIBER, will bring publishers, authors, literary agents and other sector professionals together again in Madrid from October 13th to 15th. Organised by IFEMA MADRID and promoted by Federación de Gremios de Editores de España (FGEE), the International Book Fair celebrates its 39th edition.

Over three days, Pavilion 14 of IFEMA MADRID will become the great display for the sector dedicated to the Spanish-language book, with a particular focus on digital contents, new publishers, self-publishing, publishing industry services and intellectual property. Established as one of the most important international encounters, it will show how the industry is standing up to the challenges presented by the new technologies, changing consumption habits and the situation of small and medium-sized publishing, independent publishing or technical and specialised publishing as the basis for bibliodiversity.

LIBER becomes a meeting point for the sector and a fundamental hub of exports, sales and knowledge for the Spanish-language book at a much-needed time to regain commercial momentum, particularly in the area of foreign trade.

To foster and drive commercial relations with the participating companies and promote awareness of their bibliographic portfolios, the FGEE will once again set different programmes in motion aimed at professionals from other countries of particular relevance for the sector. On the one hand, with the collaboration of Oficinas Económicas y Comerciales de España and ICEX España Exportaciones e Inversiones the Buyer’s Programme will draw approximately 640 booksellers, distributors and buyers of Spanish-language books from over 70 countries.

On the other hand, the Priority Interest Prescribers Programme, in collaboration with Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and its Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture (PICE), will invite 70 book professionals -librarians, publishing agents, university professors, publishers and managers of public organisations-, from 23 countries, with prescription, decision and/or purchase capacity for Spanish books.

Thus, attendants will have access to the rich Spanish publishing offer, enabling initial commercial contacts (acquisition of rights), the purchase (librarians and managers of public bodies) and/ or prescription of Spanish books (university professors and journalists).

In addition to the major publishing names present, LIBER will also be the scene of an interesting parallel programme of cultural and professional cultural activities, bringing together figures from the publishing sector to offer an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences on current affairs of the utmost relevance.

A space for the entire book industry

On this edition, the fair will have the Book Industry Services Zone and the Author’s Zone, with a view to helping independent authors learn more about the possibilities of self-publishing, as well as the services and tools they have available to them. Different publishing platforms, tools, processes, etc., will be concentrated in one space, while marketing, social media promotion techniques and other forms of improving sales of self-published books will also be presented. Thus, LIBER adapts and offers solutions to the needs arising from the increasing consolidation of self-publication, making room for all those companies that offer services to independent authors.

Similarly, LIBER will once again set the MicroLiber initiative in motion to facilitate and enable participation in the Fair by small publishers, entrepreneurs and start-ups, allowing them to contact buyers and visitors in a more agile and affordable way.

Graphic Image of LIBER 2021

For this edition, LIBER decided to organise a competition to choose its graphic image. Irene Blasco, the illustrator from Valencia, resident in Madrid, was the winner of this competition from 141 projects submitted. In the winner’s words, in the illustration “the reader appears in complete connection with the universe created in the book, entirely absorbed in her reading. Apart from the relaxed and intimate pleasure of the reading experience, the image represents the possibility reading offers us to connect with other worlds, other universes, to live other lives”.

LIBER 2021, organised by IFEMA MADRID and FGEE, will be held from October 13th to 15th, in Madrid. It is a fair sponsored by the Ministry for Culture and Sports, ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones, Madrid Regional Government, Madrid City Council and Centro Español de Derechos Reprográficos (CEDRO). It also enjoys the collaboration of the Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and the Asociación de Editores de Madrid.
