As Guest Country of Honour at LIBER 2025, Chile will commemorate Gabriela Mistral's legacy and promote the country’s publishing industry

The 43rd edition of the International Book Fair, to be held from 7 to 9 October at IFEMA MADRID, will feature an exceptional list of authors, publishers and cultural activities from Chile, marking the 80th anniversary of Gabriela Mistral's Nobel Prize

Chile will have the privilege of being Guest Country of Honour at LIBER 2025. Organised by IFEMA MADRID together with the Federation of Publishers' Guilds of Spain (FGEE), from 7 to 9 October the 43rd edition of the International Book Fair will offer a privileged space to promote Chile's rich literary and publishing heritage.

Chile's presence as Guest Country of Honour also coincides with the 80th anniversary of the award of the Nobel Prize for Literature to Gabriela Mistral, the first Latin American author to receive this recognition. The figure of Mistral will be one of the central themes of the programme, with activities that bring her legacy into dialogue with contemporary voices in Chilean literature.

This participation takes on even more significant as it coincides with the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the award of the Nobel Prize to Gabriela Mistral, an iconic figure in Chilean literature. Chile's presence at this important international event not only celebrates its rich literary tradition, but also opens up new opportunities for the its publishing industry, strengthening cultural ties and promoting contemporary authors on the global stage," says Carolina Arredondo Marzán, Chile's Minister of Culture, the Arts and Heritage.

A broad and diverse delegation

Chile will have a delegation of 17 participants at LIBER 2025, including publishers, agencies and other stakeholders in the book sector. It includes long-established publishing houses, independent projects and literary agencies, reflecting the bibliodiversity of the sector and the strength of the Chilean publishing industry.

Gabriel Guggisberg, ProChile 's commercial attaché in Spain, underlined that "Chile is recognised as an emerging leader, for its creativity and transversality in the publishing and literary industry. It stands out for its Nobel Prizes in literature, particularly with the first and only Spanish-speaking female author to be awarded the prize, Gabriela Mistral. Its authors and new voices have begun to strengthen new spaces and opportunities for commercial publishing exchanges.”

The Chilean delegation at LIBER 2025 will include Ebooks Patagonia, Escrito con Tiza, Minilupa, Dudo Ediciones, NautaColecciones Editores, Calcetines Animados, VLP Agency, Editorial Zig-Zag, Banda Propia, Descontexto Editores, Ediciones UC, Planeta Sostenible, Kindberg Editorial, Una casa de cartón and Humita Diseño, as well as María de los Ángeles Quinteros and Eduardo Castillo (Chilean Chamber of Books).

“According to current data on the Chilean publishing market, there are 665 publishers in Chile, with fiction, poetry, children's and young adult literature, as well as subjects such as social sciences, history and literary collections. Between 2020 and 2024, the growth of exports of goods (physical books) was 103%, rising from US$4.8 million to US$ 9.8 million. And considering exports of services such as digital books, the total sum of book exports reached over US$20 million,” explained Raúl Vilches, head of Creative Economies at ProChile

Chile's programme of activities at LIBER 2025

The programme of activities built around Chile will include round-table discussions, conferences, readings and presentations that will allow the specialised public to discover the diversity of contemporary Chilean literature. The Chile stand will be inaugurated on 7 October at 1:30 pm, paying tribute to Gabriela Mistral with a choral reading of her texts by women writers from different generations.

Over the three days of the Fair, other meetings will also be held with authors who will look at fantasy literature, the origins of Chilean literature and highlight its poetic heritage. The programme will also include book presentations and recitals which, along with artistic performances, will show the cultural wealth of Chile and the dynamism of new generations.

Chile last participated as Guest Country of Honour in 2013 and, at the 43rd edition of LIBER, to be held at IFEMA MADRID from 7 to 9 October 2025, it will once again occupy this role in order to continue strengthening cultural and professional ties with the Spanish and international publishing industry. Chile's participation is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, the Chilean Embassy in Spain, ProChile, DIRAC and Imagen de Chile.
