26 Apr 2022

From 23 to 26 June, Madrid will become the dog capital of the world. During this period, the capital will host the World Dog Show 2022 (WDS), no less than the world's most important public canine event. More than 15,000 purebred dogs from all over the world will attend the event.

The World Dog Show will be organised by the Royal Canine Society of Spain (RSCE), which has stood up for dogs in Spain since 1911, the Federation Cynologique Internationale, FCI, and IFEMA MADRID. 12,000 professional breeders are also expected, these being true guarantors of the protection, conservation and improvement of dog breeds, thereby increasing the well-being of these animals and helping them to live in harmony with people.

For the third time, Spain will be the international epicentre of dog breeds for four days. The first World Dog Show took place in Madrid in 1983. The second World Show was held in Valencia in 1992.

The choice of the Madrid venue was no accident. With 9.3 million dogs registered in Spain in 2021, according to the National Association of Pet Food Manufacturers, Spain has become one of the world’s most pet-friendly countries, where more homes have pets than children.

Dog of the Year

The delaying of the Madrid World Dog Show to 2022 caused by COVID (it was initially scheduled for April 2020) is going to create an unprecedented situation for the dog world - the holding for the first time of two World Dog Shows, since in November, Sao Paulo (Brazil) will host the WDS which was to be held in 2022.

In addition to the corresponding contests, the main novelty of the two events will be the creation of the FCI Dog of the Year Award 2022, for which the winning dogs of the Spanish and Brazilian editions will compete.

70 competition rings and more than 70,000 square metres

In the various categories, the over 15,000 dogs will be paraded in 70 competition rings, including the Central Ring, where the finals will be held. In total, five pavilions will be used at IFEMA MADRID (5, 7, 6 and 8, in addition to 10, where the Ring of Honour and the commercial area will be installed). The total area will come to 70,000 square metres.

At the World Dog Show, where the world champion will be chosen, numerous ad hoc events, such as talks, workshops and conferences, will be held to better promote the role dogs play in society and to bring the various breeds closer to the public.

The main sponsor of the World Dog Show will be Arion, which, through this agreement, will also promote the IFEMA MADRID Wi-Fi network, which will provide connection to all those attending the World Dog Show. Another sponsor of the event will be Artero, with Royal Canin as collaborator and Mapfre as official insurer, and with the support of Ourdogs.
