The director of the Inter-Branch Association for White Layer Pork (Interporc, Interprofesional del Porcino de Capa Blanca), Alberto Herranz, stated that “the professionals in the pork industry are working meticulously to advance in the reduction objectives established by the European Commission and achieve a neutral climate impact of the activity by 2050 both in terms of GHG emissions and the impact on soil, water and air.”

During the recent World Environment Day, Herranz recalled that GHG emissions from the pork sector currently represent less than 2% of all GHG produced in Spain, and this percentage has been decreasing year after year, so it is even possible to think about bringing that objective forward.
He stressed that “not only do we comply with the most demanding regulations in the world with regard to the environment, which are those of the European Union, but also in Spain we have gone much further, with our own production model based, among other aspects, on the integrated prevention and control of pollution.”
The pork sector “is not only working on, but also investing a lot of time and money in the study and development of new slurry reuse systems for energy generation, water recovery and the manufacture of non-polluting fertilisers.”
In addition, added the director of Interporc, “every day the livestock feeding, and handling systems are improved in order to minimise the generation of unpleasant odours and any type of contamination from the activity.”
Livestock farmers in the pork sector “are highly aware about and indeed have the most to gain from taking care of the environment: by preserving the environment we protect our activity.”
All this, Herranz concluded, has led us, in recent years, to reduce GHG emissions by 22%, to make our farms generate 50% less slurry, and to reduce water consumption by 30% per kilogram of meat produced.
