Espresso coffee, one of the most deeply rooted and widespread traditions in Italy, may receive UNESCO intangible heritage status in 2020.

The proposal has been promoted by the Traditional Italian Espresso Coffee Guardianship Consortium, which recently met with representatives from various political forces in the Italian Parliament who have shown their support for this initiative that seeks the promotion, appreciation and protection of this beverage.

The journey to bring coffee to UNESCO began in 2016, with the presentation of its candidacy to the agency's national commission. The decision as to whether espresso will become the second protected Italian food, after Neapolitan pizza, will be made in November.
