Madrid, 26th November 2013. IFEMA has taken a further step in its strategy to increase its international presence with the signing this morning of a cooperation agreement between Institución Ferial de Madrid and the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, ADNEC, one of the largest exhibition organisers in the United Arab Emirates, for the joint development of future exhibition projects.

This agreement, promoted by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, marks the start of an alliance that will be consolidated through specific projects. The objective is to exchange information and study the opportunities for cooperation between both exhibition companies in terms of holding trade fairs for the different economic sectors. There is also a desire to explore synergies for the promotion of their main brands in both markets. This cooperation will in addition represent a route for the companies in these two countries to increase their internationalisation and generate business.

The signing of the agreement, which was presided over by the Ambassador for the United Arab Emirates, Hissa Abdulla Ahmed Al-Otaiba, involved Luis Eduardo Cortés and Fermín Lucas, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of IFEMA respectively, as well as the Chief Executive Officer of ADNEC, Pietre Idenburg. The event was attended by the Ambassador of Qatar, Abdul Razzak Al Abdul Ghani; the Ambassador of Kuwait, Sulaiman Abdallah Al-Harbi; Head of Business at the Embassy of Oman, Al-Abbas Al Harthi; the Assistant Director for the Middle East at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Miguel Moro Aguilar; and the Sales Director for Congresses and Conferences at ADNEC, Khalifa Al Qubaisi.

ADNEC plays a key role in the business tourism industry in the United Arab Emirates, being one of the most modern exhibition centres in the world, and one of the largest in the Middle East. Its facilities include 12 exhibition halls offering 73,000 m2 of exhibition space, in addition to the 18,000 m2 of space available outside.

ADNEC Group is currently made up of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, ExCel London, Al Ain Convention Centre, Gate Capital, and various hotels located around the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

Economic ties between the two countries have increased over the last few years with a growing number of trade missions and high-level official visits. As a result, more Spanish companies have established a presence in the UAE and the investments in Spain by this country have shown sustained growth.

The trade relationship between Spain and the UAE has been strengthened over the last few years as a result of the efforts of the Joint Committee, created in 2010, which has allowed trade between the two countries to increase. This trade has grown by 75% over the last three years, increasing from €1bn in 2009 to €1.75bn in 2012. In addition, the bilateral flow of tourists rose to 70,000 people in 2012, boosted by the increase in flights between the two countries.
