Following the call for entries launched by ARCO in conjunction with the Leading Brands of Spain Forum (FMRE) and AD magazine, the jury* has selected the project LENGUAJE. Un jardín de fragmentos, presented by these architects.
GARBIZU COLLAR + BeAr are proposing to transform the ARCOmadrid Guest Lounge into a garden of architectural forms, objects and places for encounters. A landscape constructed from familiar elements that, when brought together, create an unexpected setting in which the classical and the contemporary, the monumental and the domestic coexist.
The project is organised around a chequerboard pattern that runs across the floors and walls, linking the different rooms and creating distinct atmospheres. Against this backdrop, small architectural features evoking familiar places appear, ranging from a palace built from rolls of carpet to areas designed for meeting, relaxing and dining, which are intended to encourage conversation and interaction.
As the designers explain, “We want to celebrate the joy of creating architecture with the simplest elements: geometry, proportion, colour, light, and the materials at our disposal. With LENGUAJE, we want to demonstrate that inventing something new is not always necessary to achieve something unexpected”.
The proposal is constructed using materials commonly found in exhibition spaces, such as carpet and wooden panels. These materials are given new functions temporarily to create a space of great expressive power through simple processes of arrangement, repetition and assembly. The system also allows all the components to be reclaimed at the end of the fair and reused.
“We envisage the Guest Lounge as a garden of fragments, a small palace built from ordinary materials found at the fair which, for a few days, are transformed into something extraordinary. A place that celebrates artifice, ornament and, above all, the ability of architecture to foster encounters”, say the architects.
Beyond its spatial layout, LANGUAGE conceives of architecture as a setting for interactions and experiences that give meaning to an art fair - a place to meet, chat, relax, celebrate, observe and be observed.
At the end of ARCOmadrid, the space will be dismantled and its materials restored to their original state, ready for their next use. “We like to think that, when the fair is over, the palace will become carpet again and the materials will continue their life elsewhere. Because perhaps the most important thing about architecture is not how long it lasts, but what it makes possible while it exists”.
