FUELGAE, Sustainable On-site and Innovative Technologies for Advanced Transport BioFuels from MιcroalGae.
The aviation and maritime transport sectors are transitioning to non-fossil energy sources. In this context, the FuelGae project team, funded by the European Union, is using microalgae to produce advanced liquid fuels from CO2 emissions from biorefineries and energy-intensive industries. The aim is to improve the performance of microalgae by adapting them to the specific needs of each industrial case study. The production of advanced liquid fuels will involve the selective cultivation of microalgae to obtain polysaccharides or lipids, alternative treatments for biomass, catalytic enhancement systems and the use of an online sensor. The FuelGae team incorporates integrated modelling techniques to create a global digital twin. It will also use hydrothermal liquefaction and biogas processes to produce biochar, which will be tested in agriculture to assess its environmental impact and economic sustainability.

The ASTERIx-CAESar project is a research project with 17 partners and
has received €5.3 million in funding from the European Union under the
Horizon Europe programme.
The ASTERIx-CAESar concept is a very attractive solution for stabilising
the electricity grid and facilitating greater penetration of non-manageable renewable energy
. Energy storage and manageable, flexible production
are key to implementing a 100% renewable energy system in the future.
The recent blackout on the Iberian Peninsula demonstrated the
need for renewable power plants to stabilise the electricity grid.
The ASTERIx-CAESar project focuses on the development of a novel
concept for a high-efficiency solar thermal plant with an integrated
electricity storage solution. The project combines concentrated solar power (CSP) technology
with a central receiver using air as a heat transfer fluid and
compressed air energy storage (CAES) to maximise
conversion efficiency and energy management of the electricity grid, enabling
a new operating strategy and business model.
ASTERIx-CAESar represents the crucial ‘magic potion’ for implementing
a future 100% renewable energy system.

PV4Plants is an EU-funded project that promotes synergy between agriculture and the energy sector through innovative agrivoltaic technology, also known as agri-PV, which allows the integration of photovoltaic solar modules into agricultural activities.
The main purpose of the project is to improve crop growth conditions and land use efficiency, while generating renewable energy through innovative photovoltaic panels. These panels optimise sunlight capture, creating an improved microclimate beneath them, which benefits
crop growth conditions. The project will optimise light transmission from solar panels through innovative nanoparticles applied to the surface of the photovoltaic glass. In addition, PV4Plants will implement a real-time monitoring system to keep key indicators up to date, thereby improving the efficiency of the system. The PV4plants agri-PV system will be demonstrated at three highly replicable pilot sites located in Turkey, Spain and Denmark. Finally, the PV4Plants project will give special consideration to the recyclability of the components and materials used.

However, this progress competes with food security for land and water use, in a context of climate change and population growth. In response to this situation, the agrovoltaic system has emerged, combining photovoltaic generation with agricultural production. Although there are pilot projects, its viability in crops has yet to be studied in depth. Metal Frame Renovables proposes to develop a sustainable agrovoltaic model based on knowledge of light saturation and optimal photosynthesis of strategic crops, seeking an efficient balance between food and energy production, thus promoting economic, social and environmental sustainability.
