Pedro Páramo and Antonio Martínez Asensio of Cadena SER scoop LIBER Prizes 2005

The LIBER Prize 2025 for Best Audiovisual Adaptation of a Literary Work has been awarded to the film Pedro Páramo, directed by Rodrigo Prieto. Meanwhile, the LIBER Prize 2025 for Promoting Reading in the Media has been awarded to Antonio Martínez Asensio, presenter of the radio programme Un libro, una hora (One Book, One Hour) and of the La Biblioteca (The Library) segment on the Hoy por Hoy morning show, both on Cadena SER.
The Governing Board of the Federation of Publishers’ Guilds of Spain has announced the first winners of this year’s LIBER Prize awards, to be presented on 9 October at an event in Madrid’s Centro Cultural Conde Duque, as part of the activities of the International Book Fair, LIBER 2025, which this year will be held at IFEMA MADRID from 7 to 9 October.
In this edition, the film Pedro Páramo, directed by the Mexican Rodrigo Prieto, with a screenplay by Spaniard Mateo Gil, and produced by Redrum and Woo Films, has been chosen for the LIBER Award for Best Audiovisual Adaptation of a Literary Work.
The film, screened by Netflix, offers a contemporary reading of Mexican author Juan Rulfo's mythical novel, while respecting the complex narrative structure and literary richness of the original. This screen adaptation looks to bring to new generations the story of Juan Preciado and his journey to the village of Comala, where life and death and interlink in a metaphor for 20th century rural Mexico.
Promoting Reading in the Media
Meanwhile the LIBER Award 2025 for Promoting Reading in the Media has been awarded to journalist Antonio Martínez Asensio, for his work on the Un libro, una hora radio programme on Cadena SER, looking at a classic of universal literature every week. Asensio also presents the La Biblioteca (The Library) segment on Cadena SER’s morning show Hoy por Hoy, presenting the latest news from the publishing sector every week and interviewing authors with an informative and entertaining approach.
Running since June 2019, Un libro, una hora has covered close to 300 works, selecting fragments of each text to narrate the whole story in 60 minutes. The readings, dramatized by actors, and the contextual explanations offered by Antonio Martínez Asensio, allow listeners to understand the work in depth and pique public interest with the aim of promoting reading through the power of radio narration. The La Biblioteca segment is broadcast on Fridays as part of Hoy por Hoy, Cadena SER’s popular morning show and one of Spain's leading radio programmes.
Together with these two prizes, the FGEE will also present the Boixareu Ginesta Prize for Bookshop of the Year and the LIBER Prize for Best Initiative to Promote Reading in Libraries open to the public. The LIBER Homage will also be awarded to an outstanding Hispano-American author. These winners will be announced soon.
