LIBER se celebrará del 4 al 6 de octubre en el Recinto Ferial de Madrid.

The Spanish Federation of Publishers' Guilds (FGEE) has awarded the LIBER 2023 prize for the best audiovisual adaptation of a literary work to the series 'Los pacientes del doctor García' ('Doctor García's Patients'), based on the novel of the same name by Almudena Grandes. It has also decided to award the LIBER 2023 prize for the promotion of reading in the media to the supplement 'La Lectura' ('Reading') of the newspaper El Mundo.

The winners of the 2023 LIBER Awards are gradually being announced. As in previous years, the Board of Directors of the Federation of Publishers' Guilds awards entities and individuals linked to the world of books - an ecosystem that is responsible for disseminating the value of books and culture in today's society.

On this occasion, the FGEE has decided to award the LIBER Prize for the best audiovisual adaptation of a literary work to the series 'Los pacientes del doctor García' ('Doctor García's patients'), co-produced by RTVE, Diagonal (Banijay Iberia) and DeAPlaneta, with the participation of Netflix. With this award, the Board of Directors wanted to highlight the interesting synthesis they have made of the saga Episodios de una Guerra Interminable (Episodes of an Endless War) by Almudena Grandes, which is broadcast on free-to-air television and narrates part of our contemporary history. As a matter of fact, this is the first time that one of her novels has been shown on the small screen in Spain.

The series, directed by Joan Noguera, with script and adaptation by José Luis Martín and Nacho Pérez de la Paz, connects real and unknown events of World War II and Francoism to create the lives of characters who share not only the fate of Spain, but also that of Argentina. The cast of the series is headed by Javier Rey, Tamar Novas and Verónica Echegui.

Liber Award for the Promotion of Reading in the Media

With regard to the supplement 'La Lectura' ('Reading') of the newspaper El Mundo, the Board of Directors of the FGEE wanted to highlight both the choice of its name and the careful attention it pays to new publications, the brilliance of its presentation and the fact that, despite its infancy, it has become a benchmark in the literary and cultural world.

'La Lectura' (‘Reading’) is a weekly magazine that, as of January 2022, will be distributed every Friday together with the newspaper El Mundo. The magazine is responsible for offering the main trends in the world of books, the arts, theatre and films. It also covers the most important debates in history, science, geopolitics and social change. Moreover, each week it devotes its front page to the work of an artist, in the manner of a "museum without walls". Directed by Maite Rico, it is defined as a space for information, discovery and reflection "committed to free thought", as well as a "meeting point for readers, creators and cultural agents from Spain and Latin America".

The award ceremony will be held on 5 October as one of the activities of the International Book Fair, Liber 2023, which this year is being held in Madrid. At the same event, the Boixareu Ginesta Award for Bookseller of the Year will also be presented, as well as the Liber Awards for the best initiative to promote reading in public libraries. There will also be an award for the most outstanding Spanish-American author and a tribute will be paid to a publisher for his or her career in the world of books. These awards will be announced in the near future.
