UNIBAN: Behind Every Banana, There’s a Story of Impact
In Urabá, northern Colombia, the day begins long before the rest of the world wakes up. Among lush green banana plants swaying in the breeze and paths surrounded by extraordinary biodiversity, thousands of people work every day to produce a fruit that will cross oceans and reach the tables of millions of families.
But behind every banana, there is more than agriculture. There are stories. There is a territory. There are decisions driven by the belief that food production and positive impact can go hand in hand.
For the past 60 years, UNIBAN has built an operation that connects growers, communities, innovation, and global markets. Today, the company exports nearly 36 million boxes of bananas each year to more than 25 countries. Yet its vision extends far beyond volume: it is committed to transforming the way sustainability is understood and implemented in agriculture.
82 Kilometres of Protected Biological Corridors
That commitment begins in the field. Today, 50% of UNIBAN’s farms in Urabá incorporate digital and precision agriculture, improving productivity while optimizing the use of resources. At the same time, environmental protection has become an essential part of its production model. The company now safeguards 82 kilometres of protected biological corridors and monitors more than 3,100 records of flora and fauna as part of its ongoing commitment to biodiversity conservation.
Sustainability is also about people. Today, 93% of agricultural workers earn above the local living wage, while the average income exceeds the Colombian legal minimum wage by 67%. For UNIBAN, sustainability also means promoting well-being, creating opportunities, and improving quality of life.
This positive impact extends well beyond the farms. In 2025, more than 121,925 people benefited from social and environmental programmes led by UNIBAN and its Foundation, supporting education, infrastructure, and community development initiatives.
At a time when consumers, retailers, and international markets increasingly demand more responsible supply chains, sustainability is no longer a competitive advantage—it has become a shared responsibility.
Because behind every banana exported lies a simple conviction: agriculture and nature can grow together.
