The Prototofanousi Fruits SA (Proto) company is a family-owned business, activated in the fruit sector since 1928. With the 4th generation fully activated, and 98 years of experience, the company today has a purely export-oriented character.
With a group of approximately 600 growers, the company has specialized in three products: Kiwis (annually 32.000 tons), Cherries (annually 11.000 tons) and Grapes (annually 1.500 tons). With this dynamic, the company is ranked as the biggest kiwi/cherry packer in Greece and among the biggest respective companies in Europe.The Proto brand has been well-aware in a series of markets worldwide, including the USA, Canada, Brazil, South Africa, India, several Asian countries, the Middle East, and European.
As regards Kiwi, the company operates in a total area of 11.8 Has (3.6 Has covered), including packing houses, and cooling rooms under controlled atmosphere conditions. With this infrastructure and having as main objective to supply its customers with products of high quality, the company has a total kiwi packing capacity of 35 tons/hour, and a storing capacity of 30.000 tons. The company handles both green kiwis and yellow kiwis of the Zespri variety Sungold.Proto is not only a kiwi packer, but also a grower, cultivating today an area of 100 Has (26 Has of the Sungold variety).
In Cherry, the company operates two facilities. A Consolidation Area / Precooling Facility in the main Cherry producing area in Greece and a packing facility with a 20-lane electronic sorter, having a packing capacity of 12 tons/hr. With such infrastructure, growers harvest on Day 1 and the packed cherries are ready to dispatch on Day 2. Giving thus to the final consumer the ability to enjoy the freshness of cherries that have significantly high self-life. In Grapes, the company handles approximately 1.500 tons of products, harvested from the areas of Pieria, Kavala, Central Greece and Corinth.
Apart from the famous Crimson and Thomson, the portfolio includes several other seedless varieties (such as Sugar Crisp, Sweet Globe, Jack's Salute and Sweet Celebration by Bloom Fresh), as well as seeded ones (like Italia and Red Globe).
New investments for the next three years
In Proto, a new project is always on the way. The company continually grows and invests in several sectors. After the last expansion in cooling rooms in year 2025, further investments are in process to be made in the next 3 years, regarding cherries and kiwis.
