Chiquita: Shaping the Future of Bananas
What comes after Cavendish? At Fruit Attraction 2026, Chiquita offers a closer look at how innovation is shaping the next generation of bananas.
Bananas today face increasing pressure from diseases such as Tropical Race 4 (TR4), a soil-borne fungus impacting production across continents, and Black Sigatoka, which continues to challenge yield and quality. Addressing these threats requires a new approach. This is where Yelloway, a banana breeding initiative led by Chiquita and KeyGene, plays a key role.
Yelloway combines advanced genomics with conventional breeding to accelerate the development of new banana varieties. At the heart of this effort is a comprehensive banana “pan-genome,” built from a wide diversity of banana varieties, enabling researchers to identify naturally occurring resistance traits with high precision.
This approach is already transforming breeding timelines. Instead of waiting years for plants to show disease symptoms, scientists can now screen for resistance at an early stage, dramatically accelerating progress while remaining fully non-GMO.
Today, this work is moving beyond the lab. New hybrid varieties with improved resistance to TR4 and Black Sigatoka are advancing through field trials, marking a critical step toward future commercialization.
New generation of bananas
Beyond disease resistance, this work is opening the door to a new generation of bananas, designed not only for resilience, but also to meet evolving expectations around quality, taste, and sustainability. For growers, this means reduced reliance on inputs, greater stability, and improved long-term viability.
At Fruit Attraction, visitors will gain a closer look at how these innovations are progressing, from scientific discovery to real-world application.
Experts from Chiquita and Yelloway’s research teams will be on site, available for one-on-one discussions sharing the latest breakthroughs and field progress.
Join us at Fruit Attraction, Hall 10, Stand 10C11, to explore how today’s breakthroughs are shaping the next generation of bananas.
