The Tour and Activities’ strengthening is in the hands of its online growth, we got to know that only the 17 % of the companies in this sector take advantage of the ecommerce channel according to the research conducted by the company Zizerones.
Over the last months, there have been many signs that show that the time has come regarding a consolidation of the Tours and Activities industry at an international level.
2015 was the year in which finally the OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) have decided to focus their attention and resources on this industry. According to the study by a travel industry research company PhoCusWright, this sector generated that year the amount of 37,000 million Euros in Europe, tripling the total market size of car rentalr (10,000 million Euros), reaching almost half the total market for hotel reservations (80,000 million Euros).
Through the last year, big companies as Expedia or websites such as Viator and GetYourGuide have opened its platforms in order to give visibility to a greater number of activities. If the Activity providers do not want to lose its opportunity in this market, it is certain that it is the right time to step into ecommerce. In case they do not take this opportunity, they will be swept away by the competition.
It is a fact that this sector is based on many small operators that generate a very limited product offer. These are mainly SMEs which do not invest in innovation and technology. It means that, when practically all the Tourism services (especially flights, hotels and apartments) have definitely made the move to ecommerce, the Tours and Activities industry does not take advantage of the potential of the online management and online distribution. According to PhoCusWright’s study, 83 % of the companies still work with traditional methods for their daily management, which means that digital customers are not able to encounter the products in an online channel.
