Interview with Matías Dobarco
“Textile Editors is a sector with great strength within Intergift”
With more than half a century traveling across Spain with a sample case in hand, Matías Dobarco has become one of the most recognized voices in decorative textiles. A representative of leading firms and a profound connoisseur of the market, he analyzes current trends, the rise of sustainable materials, and the key role Textile Editors play in every edition of Intergift.
“I’ve been in textiles for 56 years and still have no desire to close my suitcase”
How did your interest in decoration and interior design begin?
At 19, I started working in the textile sector, and by 23 I was already traveling all over Spain showing fabric and furniture collections, as well as attending fairs and events whenever I could. I’ve been doing this for 56 years… and still without any desire to close my suitcase.
Which brands do you currently represent?
Yutes Natural Fabrics, Linatura, Barbara Osorio Fabrics, Aldeco, and Manuel Larraga.
Trends: naturalness, functionality, and immersive landscapes
What are the strongest trends in upholstery fabrics?
I see two main lines: on one hand, fabrics with very natural fibers, lots of texture, and earthy tones; on the other, synthetic textiles with highly functional treatments—stain-resistant, fire-resistant—ideal for contract projects, as well as outdoor fabrics.
Which wallpapers are currently on the rise?
Panoramic murals featuring plant motifs, jungles, and landscapes are dominating, along with geometric designs. There is also high demand for textured wallpapers that imitate natural materials such as linen or silk.
Which colors and materials will dominate the coming years?
More than specific colors, what changes each year are the combinations and coordination approaches. As for materials: wood, stone, ceramics, glass, sisal, jute, linen, and recycled pieces. Everything sustainable and organic continues to gain ground.
“A good upholstery fabric must exceed 30,000 rubs; and the more natural, the better”
What characteristics should a good upholstery fabric have?
A resistance above 30,000 rubs to ensure durability. Personally, I prefer upholstery woven with natural fibers such as linen and cotton: they are more comfortable, healthier, and age better.
How do fashion, architecture, and art influence your collections?
Fashion directly impacts color, textures, and prints. Each professional creates their own universes by coordinating collections. We live in a constant flow of ideas that spread across multiple platforms and influence almost every dimension of our lives.
Which prints or textures are most in demand by the public?
Comfortable, high-quality textures, along with unique and exclusive prints.
Looking at the sector
How do you see the future of the industry?
Fabrics, wallpapers, and rugs will continue to be essential in creating comfort in homes, hotels, or restaurants. Decoration has a very direct impact on people’s quality of life.
What does Textile Editors expect from Intergift in February 2026?
A great influx of visitors, new clients, new projects… This year we will be located at the center of Hall 9, surrounded by the gift and furniture sectors. Intergift is an outstanding showcase where each editor can present their new collections and attract numerous decoration professionals. We are a sector with great strength within Intergift.
