IFEMA implements the best WIFI network in Spain

· The new WIFI system allows up to 64,000 simultaneous connections at present, and will allow up to 100,000 in the future, figures equivalent to double the maximum number of simultaneous users who attend events such as the Mobile World Congress

· The project to revamp the entire WIFI connection infrastructure has involved an investment of €3.4 million, and will allow free access to this network to visitors to the fairs organised by IFEMA

· It is a state-of-the-art facility prepared for high user densities supported by more than 1,100 access points and 2,000 state-of-the-art antennas, covering the entire 230,000 m2 surface area

During the summer months, IFEMA has undertaken an ambitious project to refurbish its entire WiFi wireless connection infrastructure, the installation of which is scheduled to end in September. It is a large-scale project with investment totalling €3.4 million, and the finished product is the best WIFI network ever installed in Spain. Its installation has made it possible to provide all of IFEMA's facilities with a state-of-the-art WiFi connection in all areas of commercial use, totalling more than 230,000 square metres. With this, the institution will be able to offer visitors to the fairs that it organises a free connection to the network. It will also be possible to configure a wide range of high-performance premium services for the exhibiting companies that require wireless installations to carry out their business.

According to the general director of IFEMA, Eduardo López-Puertas, "the commitment to implementing the best WIFI network that currently exists in Spain has been a priority for IFEMA and a strategic decision in its investment plan to strengthen its positioning through the quality and performance of its services and the experience of its visitors and exhibitors".

The installation, which will soon allow connection throughout the site for the more than 3.5 million visitors who attend the Feria de Madrid annually, achieves impressive figures such as more than 1,100 access points and 2,000 antennas installed, or the 90 kilometres of multimode optical fibre and wiring installed. This large-scale infrastructure can support more than 64,000 simultaneous connections at present and up to 100,000 in the future, figures that double the maximum number of concurrent users that currently attend technological events such as the Mobile World Congress.  To achieve this

CISCO technology has been used with Aironet 3800 series access points, which support the most advanced WiFi standard (802.11ac Wave 2 MU-MIMO). This technology allows each connection rate to reach up to 5.2 Gbps, almost 4 times more than through the previous 802.11ac technology.

The project has been a significant organisational and logistical challenge, with an investment of more than 16,000 work-hours, carried out within a very limited time-frame. It has required the close involvement of the Information Technology Directorate, along with IFEMA's other technical areas, to make the new installation compatible with all the existing infrastructure, guaranteeing the absence of problems and its perfect operation.

IFEMA has allocated a total of €3.4 million for the installation of the new WIFI network, as part of its global investment plan for 2018, which totals €25 million. The project has been developed in parallel with the installation of a high security system to automatically control all the access points to its premises, as well as the new emergency public address system, with an investment of €5 million. Over the next 5 years, IFEMA’s Strategic Plan includes an expected investment of €100 million for the improvement and installation of infrastructure, communications, digitalisation and security.
