Digitization of the aftermarket: the key to strengthening customer relationships in the automotive industry
The rise of e-commerce has prompted auto repair shops to adopt digital tools and emphasize transparency as a key differentiator.
The digitization of commerce is changing the way consumers interact with various services, and the automotive aftermarket is no exception. In Chile, e-commerce surpassed US$10 billion in sales in 2023, and this upward trend has continued, according to the Santiago Chamber of Commerce, establishing itself as a key channel for purchasing products, including auto parts.
This phenomenon has given rise to a new type of customer: one who is better informed, with immediate access to prices, brands, and alternatives, and with a greater ability to compare options before making a decision. While this represents an opportunity to increase transparency and professionalize service, it also introduces challenges to the traditional operations of auto repair shops.
One of the main challenges has to do with pricing. The aftermarket industry has historically been marked by significant price disparities among repair shops, often without justification. Now, with greater access to information, customers compare prices, especially those found online.
That said, e-commerce still lags behind when it comes to immediacy. When purchasing products online, shipping times don’t always meet the urgency required to resolve a problem, creating a disconnect between what the customer expects and what the service actually delivers.
However, this scenario also opens up concrete opportunities. Digitalization allows for optimized communication with customers and greater transparency. Tools such as digital quotes, job tracking, and direct contact channels can become a major advantage.
These benefits, however, could come to nothing if workshops do not undergo a genuine modernization process. Professionalization must go hand in hand not only with excellent mechanical service but also with the proper management of virtual platforms. These details can make all the difference to the customer and will continue to become more widespread over time.
This transformation process will be a key focus at Motortec Chile, the country’s leading aftermarket trade show, organized by IFEMA MADRID and FISA of the GL events group, which will take place at Espacio Riesco from June 18 to 20, 2026.
If you want to experience these trends firsthand, see live demonstrations, and discover the latest advances in automotive parts and safety, you can’t miss the industry’s most important event.
We invite you to MOTORTEC 2026, the gathering where experts, brands, and enthusiasts come together to shape the future of the automotive aftermarket.
