IFEMA's head of security, Alfonso Illescas, was presented with the trophy at the 23rd International Security Awards on 21 December before more than 500 sector professionals in recognition of the merits and actions of the organisations and people and institutions that were behind the development of the sector in 2018.
This award recognises the state-of-the-art work carried out by the Security and Self-Protection Department on technology and quality and safety standards for facilities with a high activity density, which are accessed by over 700,000 vehicles, trucks and loading machines and which welcome more than 3.5 million visitors each year. In his acceptance speech, Alfonso Illescas said that this was "a major project, a demonstration of IFEMA's commitment to safety, which is subject to continuous innovation and technological upgrading, as well as to facing the challenge of making its facilities the safest exhibition venues in Europe."
The system comprises a set of protection devices featuring the latest barrier systems and video surveillance equipment deployed in strategic positions, fully integrated and centrally operated by the IFEMA security team at the Control Centre. This provides control over all positions and locations and performs more than 2,000 operations a day including barrier operation. The installation features almost a hundred bollards made of high-performance steel, capable of resisting impacts from freight vehicles driven at high speed. As the system is fully mechanized and automated, it can be flexibly adapted to each type of situation, as well as to the levels of security established by the Ministry of the Interior.
The high security access control and video surveillance system, which cost over 2 million euros, has been in operation since September.
