Technologies drive Brazilian progress in fruit production.
Fruit Attraction São Paulo highlights the importance of using new tools in the country, historically known for being a leader in harvesting.
São Paulo, March 2024 – With the help of technology, Brazil has been breaking records in fruit production. The national competitive advantage and the use of new tools will be highlighted at the first edition of Fruit Attraction São Paulo in the country, from April 16th to 18th, at São Paulo Expo.
According to data from the Brazilian Association of Fruit and Derivative Producers and Exporters (Abrafrutas), Brazil increased its exports from 40.6 million tons in 2020 to 41.36 million tons in 2022. The positive figures continued in 2023, when export revenue reached a record US$1.23 billion, an increase of 26.71% compared to the previous year.
“The fair will showcase Brazil to the world. The country has enormous potential in fruit production. Unlike anywhere else in the world, fruits here are produced year-round. We can place our product in markets where the rest of the world doesn't have access. It's an event that's here to stay, and I'm sure it will be the first of many more,” says Guilherme Coelho, president of Abrafrutas.
The organization's president points out that Brazil has always participated in events around the world, but when the entire sector is here, it's different. “It will be possible to showcase our products up close and conduct technical demonstrations. Therefore, the event becomes extremely important for the national culture to promote its exports. It's a rich event across all sectors, with representatives from logistics, packaging, certifications, and more.”
Guilherme Coelho explains that small and medium-sized producers are already using technology in fruit production, boosting efficiency and minimizing environmental impacts. Sensors, to monitor environmental conditions and the state of the plants, drones, with high-resolution images of large areas of land, and artificial intelligence, processing large volumes of data and identifying patterns and trends, are the main tools.
“All these advancements, combined with the good ESG practices that we are increasingly seeking, are major drivers of business. The message that the new tools bring is that if producers join together with cooperatives and associations, they will have opportunities to reach all markets. The event will have important importers looking for new business, and state governments are also collaborating to ensure that more local producers are present,” adds the president of Abrafrutas.
Revolutionary molecule
With an annual investment of €950 million in research and development, BASF is one of the companies contributing to the successful application of new technologies in fruit and vegetable farming. The company will be present at the fair to showcase its solutions, such as Duravel®, a biological fungicide with zero residue that contributes to the management of resistant fungi, as well as supporting crop productivity, quality, and profitability.
“Solutions in seeds and crop protection are becoming increasingly efficient. The emergence of new technologies is important for the health of crops, which face diseases, pests, and even adverse weather conditions. Therefore, it is very important for horticulturists to pay attention to the launch of innovations that can contribute to management for greater productivity with sustainability,” says Rodrigo Pifano, Marketing Manager for Fruit and Vegetable Crops at BASF.
In 2024, the company plans to launch products based on the active ingredient Revysol, a revolutionary molecule for disease control, bringing increasingly efficient alternatives to farmers. The ingredient developed by BASF allows the product to have greater selectivity and flexibility in disease control, acting on various points of the fungi. The active ingredient will generate a family of innovative fungicides for various crops.
“More efficient production results in a more rational use of resources, both in relation to crop protection inputs, such as pesticides, and in relation to natural resources, such as water, which are essential for crop management. Combined with good agricultural practices, the correct use of products by farmers promotes greater effectiveness in controlling pests and diseases, reducing the need for further applications,” points out Pifano.
The expert believes that currently, there is already a good awareness on the part of producers regarding the importance of the proper use of products and the implementation of good environmental practices in crops. “However, there is always room for improvement. Therefore, in case of doubt, it is essential that the horticulturist consults an agricultural engineer and pays attention to the details related to the products, the crop, and the management, as each aspect can make a significant difference,” concludes the manager.
