Peru emerges as the world’s fourth-largest exporter of ginger in the first quarter of 2020

The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism stated that, in the context of the health emergency caused by Covid-19, the increase in Peruvian ginger exports has been outstanding, with accumulated growth of +168% in the first four months of this year. The excellent performance of this plant was due to higher sales to countries such as Spain (+529%), the Netherlands (+255%) and the United States (+124%), with the last two being the first- and second-largest importers of this product worldwide respectively. The growth in imports simply confirms the capacity to generate business between Peru and Spain, and their potential to jointly supply Europe and other international markets.

In this period, 71 Peruvian companies, mainly from Junín - the top Peruvian region in production and exports - exported this product to 18 markets worldwide, an increase of 25% on last year.
Peru is the world’s fourth-largest exporter of ginger after China, Thailand and India. In 2019, 23,400 MT of ginger were exported, amounting to USD 41.5 million.
As is known, ginger is rich in antioxidants. In addition to its use in cooking, it is credited with medicinal benefits such as strengthening the immune system, which could explain its increased consumption in this pandemic scenario.
