24 May saw the presentation  of the FITUR 2017 Awards, which promote excellence and innovation in companies and institutions through the recognition of the Best Stands, the Best Active Tourism Products and the best tourism-related academic research work

FITUR, the International Tourism Trade Fair, has presented the awards for Best Stands, 22nd Active Tourism and Tribuna FITUR-Jorge Vila Fradera, which correspond to their latest edition. The announcement of the awards took place within the context of the Trade Fair, which was staged from 18 to 22 January at Feria de Madrid. With these awards, FITUR seeks to promote excellence and innovation in tourism by recognising the efforts of companies, professionals and researchers in enhancing the industry’s image, creating new products that diversify the offering and contribute to sustainable development, and to conduct research in order to drive forward the evolution of this market through knowledge and analysis.


The ceremony, presided over by the Secretary of State for Tourism, Matilde Asían, was attended by Luis Gallego, CEO of the FITUR Organising Committee; Carlos Chaguaceda, Director-General for Tourism of the Madrid Region; Clemente González Soler and Eduardo López-Puertas, respectively President and Managing Director of IFEMA; Carlos Prieto, Managing Director of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services; Ana Larrañaga, Director of FITUR; and Paloma Fernández, Director of Aire Libre Magazine.

In this edition of the Best Stands - Country Category, the awards went to Korea, Egypt and Colombia. Furthermore, in the autonomous regions section, the Balearic Islands, Castile-La Mancha and Andalusia were recognised and, in the companies section, the winners were Trasmediterranea, Iberia and Meliá Hotels International. 

With the Best Active Tourism Product Competition, FITUR, in collaboration with Aire Libre magazine, seeks to boost the development and marketing of the tourism industry and promote those higher-quality tourism products. The winners in this edition of the Competition were the following in: National Category, Adventure Modality, the award went to “Discover Cantabria, Adventure Special”. Albergue Isidro Paradiso, S.L. (Cantabria); in Nature, “The Fifth Lake”. Pirineu Emoció” (Lérida); the “Cortijo country house in Jaén, a unique sanctuary for discovering nature” (Jaén), a distinction in the Culture Modality; and, lastly, in Wine & Gastronomy, the award went to “The 3 flavours of the Orotava Midlands” (Santa Cruz de Tenerife).  A Jury Mention was likewise awarded to “Turnkey Jaén”, Department for Tourism, Economic Promotion and Historic Centre of Jaén City Hall.

In the international sphere, “Patagonia: End of the World Tour” (Argentina) was recognised in the Adventure Modality; “Astrotourism: Star Trails in the Atacama Desert” (Chile) was recognised in Nature; “Peru Mucho Gusto” (Peru) was recognised in Wine & Gastronomy and “ Tepoztlán Magic and Culture” (Mexico) was the winner in the Culture modality.

Lastly, FITUR 2017 organised the 18th edition of the Tribuna FITUR-Jorge Vila Fradera Award, which seeks to acknowledge the best academic research work relating to the tourism industry. On this occasion, the distinction went to “Analysis of Higher Education in Tourism in Latin America and Spain”, by Daniel Celis Sosa. This project contributes to a better understanding of higher education in hospitality and tourism in Latin America and Spain.
