In 1987, IFEMA and ARCOmadrid jointly created the ARCO Foundation, a non-profit organization whose holdings are used for the promotion of contemporary art. The ARCO Foundation started the collection with works acquired during the art fair, with the aim of contributing to the development and promotion of Spanish and international contemporary art, and the divulgation of its collection via scheduled exhibitions and theoretical events. Throughout its twenty-one years of existence, the Foundation’s objective has been two-fold: on the one hand, to serve as an example to other institutions in terms of acquiring works at ARCOmadrid and, on the other, to encourage international contemporary art collecting and to drive the market based on the ARCOmadrid fair.
This marked the beginning of a collection with a clear pluralist style. It is international in scope and represents some of the main artistic trends of the second half of the twentieth century. It includes works by key artists in the recent history of contemporary art, such as Christian Boltanski, Donald Judd, Anish Kapoor, Mike Kelley, Guillermo Kuitca, Richard Long, Mario Merz, Sigmar Polke, Arnulf Rainer, Richard Serra, Thomas Hirschhorn and Thomas Ruff, among others. The ARCO Foundation Collection currently has 235 works by 197 artists, acquired from 128 galleries that have taken part in various editions of the fair and held at the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporá (CGAC) in Santiago de Compostela.
The Plataforma Fundación ARCO will allow the acquisition of new works of art with the support of collectors and art lovers that will participate in this proposal.
