From 22nd to 24th of November, IFEMA was proud to host the XXXVIII National Congress of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI) together with the XV Congress of Internal M edicine Society of Madrid - Castilla La Mancha (SOMIMACA), a congress designed with a scientific program in accordance with the main branches and specialties of internal medicine. This event enabled internists from all over Spain, endocrinologists, family doctors, among others to share opinions, knowledge, experiences and new advances and concepts in thisspecialty.
Beyond the scientific program. As a novelty in this edition, different topics from the practice of medicine were discussed, topics which influence the healthcare of the population: climate change, the influence of genetics and genetic counseling in current medicine, amongst others. The congress even treated issues about new technologies such as big data in healthcare.
Evolution of attendance. The congress was attended by 2,200 professionals. Andrea de la Herrán Coombs, Senior Executive Congress Dept Manager in S & H Medical Science Service, confirms that attendance has not increased compared to the previous edition held in Zaragoza, but they “have detected a positive evolution in the last three years".
App-powered communication. The congress used an app with which participants could check relevant information such as the scientific program, communications, rooms and schedules. It also enabled them to plan their attendance, selecting to the most interesting research works, getting information about activities, sending questions to speakers in direct, consulting abstracts, and participating in voting of the sessions.
Important role of the sponsors. The exhibition area had a total of 20 stands. "The sponsors are very important as they collaborate financially to make the congress work, through stands or collaborating with activities during the congress", pointed out Andrea de la Herrán.
¿Digital or paper? Each congress has its own preferences. During the SEMI congress, the format for posters was digital. "it is easier to update, manage and save the information of the conference if you use a digital format, and it also allows participants to access the data and the presentations of the speakers and congress delegates, making it so more accessible", says Andrea de la Herrán.
