The number of tourists arriving in Spain, and their travel expenditure, continues to grow. According to Frontur, our country has welcomed 52.4 million international tourists between January and August of this year, representing a growth of 7.4% over 2013 and nearly 3 million non-residents more. The sources of this higher influx of travellers were to a large extent United Kingdom, Germany and especially France. Furthermore, international tourists who travelled to Spain in the first eight months of the year set a new record after making total disbursements of 43.584 billion euros, 7.4% more than in the same period last year, according to the Tourist Expenditure Survey (EGATUR) conducted by the Sub-Directorate General of Tourist Knowledge and Studies of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.

Health tourism is growing at a strong pace both internationally and in Spain, where it still has a great deal of development potential owing to the good conditions and infrastructures and to the different initiatives that are being launched to promote it. According to industry sources, all of these circumstances will lead Spain to achieving a turnover in this tourist segment of nearly 300 million euros in 2015, which will double to 600 million in the subsequent four years.

Spain’s role as a source of outbound tourism to other countries in the world is clearly increasing and the growth of tourism expenditure made by Spaniards abroad is particularly remarkable. According to the latest figures from the Spain Tourism Institute of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, total expenditure for Spanish outbound tourism was 2.172 billion euros in the first four months of 2014, representing an increase of 15.4% over the same period in 2013, a far higher increase than that of internal tourism expenditure, which was 4.4%. This evolution makes the opportunities for capturing tourists that FITUR 2015 will offer even more attractive to all the countries participating in the trade show.

Foto The potential of shopping tourism, which will be confirmed at FITUR, brings more than 1.1 billion per year to Spain

Spain has become the fourth favourite country in the world for shopping tourism, and in our territory alone, non-EU travellers spend 1.1 billion euros per year on this activity. Indeed, as will be confirmed at FITUR SHOPPING – one of the trade show’s major commitments at its upcoming staging –, shopping tourism has a weight in the sector as a whole that is increasing constantly, and the number of tourists who travel mainly for this purpose is steadily growing. There is no doubt that this phenomenon is already representing an important contribution to the economy of the most specialised countries in this domain.
