Vienna’s Christmas markets, Parisian boutiques, New York malls, Hong Kong’s night market, London’s street markets or Istanbul’s grand bazaar attract millions of tourists each year. A glance at the latest report from the World Tourism Organisation confirms that shopping has become an increasingly important factor for tourists when choosing a destination. In Spain, Madrid and Barcelona already offer consolidated products, with established zones and routes, personalised services, events associated with shopping or fashion as well as the freedom of opening hours that attracts so many visitors. And other major Spanish capitals such as Seville are also seeking to channel their efforts into shopping as a way to drive forward their tourism development.

Foto Spain: in a privileged position to export its tourism know-how to the world

Spain is in a privileged position to export to the world the know-how of the private tourism sector as well as its experience, which has led our companies to be viewed as the international standard in this industry. In this context, the Government is increasingly committed to boosting this internationalisation and to favour the outreach of tourism entrepreneurs towards foreign countries, as pointed out by the Spanish Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism, José Manuel Soria, at the 98th meeting of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). The policy of fast-tracking tourist visas forms part of this line of action, as does the improvement in connectivity and in air transport flows.

Foto The MICE segment also does shopping, as will be seen at FITUR

In Europe, shopping generates 13.5 billion euros annually, an expenditure made not only by tourists but also by people who travel on business and by attendees at conferences and conventions. The reason is that shopping tourism –which has become a strategic area for the growth of the tourism industry– is also becoming a force to be reckoned with in the MICE sector, an area in which Spanish cities are well placed. In fact, Madrid ranks second in the world ranking of congressional cities, only behind Paris, with Barcelona in fourth position according to the barometer of the International Congress and Convention Association, ICCA. Spain, as a congressional country ranks third.
