IFEMA has strengthened its international capacity as a venue for large professional events. Having been chosen to host the congress in 2014, IFEMA will once again welcome the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress. This Congress is organised by the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), in collaboration with the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR), and is one of the most prestigious and influential international meetings of this medical speciality. It will take place in Madrid from 8 to 12 September 2017.

ESMO 2017 will attract more than 20,000 sector professionals to the city, mainly scientists, researchers and clinicians in the field of oncology, who will attend to network and share their knowledge. One of the objectives of holding this event is to boost integration of science in the clinical setting to help to close the divide between innovative research and clinical use, to obtain the best results in cancer treatments.

Collaboration between ESMO and EACR is essential at a time when in-depth understanding of the molecular biology that underpins the development of cancer is of the essence. Because of this, integrating science in oncology will be the overall objective at ESMO 2017

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), founded in 1975, has been supporting oncology professionals for more than 40 years, and this is one of the most prestigious events on the subject in the world.

Among ESMO's main objectives are to highlight the work that it does to improve quality in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care of cancer victims, and to increase appreciation of oncologists, disseminate knowledge of oncology to patients and the public, provide education and training to those working in clinical cancer care and research; as well as ensuring equitable access to optimal treatment for all cancer patients.

ESMO has chosen Madrid and IFEMA again for its conference, where it was also held in 2014. Last time Madrid was selected, there were 20,000 attendees at the conference, 80% of whom were foreign, generating an estimated income of more than €20 million, as well as 75,000 overnight stays. That time, the Spanish Medical Oncology Society (SEOM) had a very important role as a local strategic partner, since the event was associated with another two events: the SEOM symposium and the Spanish Group of Patients with Cancer (GEPAC). All this was accompanied by an awareness campaign called “Talking about Cancer in Madrid).

Madrids advantages as a venue for large congresses

Among other attractions, Madrid's growing importance is due to its position as a flight hub, an excellent range of hotel accommodation, IFEMA's superb facilities and management skills, the city's highly developed tourism infrastructure and its marvellous cultural and leisure options. Together, these features make it a top choice for large organisations.
